Say it and your microphone

Saying lines needs a microphone. Everything else works without one, and the one built into your laptop is fine.

Allow your microphone in Chrome

  1. On Netflix, hold Space on a line. If your microphone isn't allowed yet, StreamTutor shows Allow mic over the paused film. Click it.
  2. In the StreamTutor tab that opens, click Allow microphone, then choose Allow when Chrome prompts you.
  3. Go back to Netflix and hold Space on a line again.

Blocked it by mistake? In that tab, click the microphone icon in the address bar and choose Allow. Or open chrome://settings/content/microphone and allow StreamTutor there. The same page sets which microphone Chrome uses.

On a Mac or a Windows PC

Chrome needs your computer's permission too.

  • Mac: open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and turn on Google Chrome. If macOS prompts you, quit and reopen Chrome.
  • Windows 11: open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone and turn on Microphone access and Let desktop apps access your microphone. On Windows 10, it's Settings → Privacy → Microphone.

Headsets and AirPods

Wired headsets and USB microphones work just like the built-in one. If one is plugged in but isn't picked up, choose it at the top of chrome://settings/content/microphone.

AirPods and other Bluetooth headphones switch to call mode while their microphone is on, so the film sounds thinner until a few seconds after your try. To keep the film's full sound, listen on your AirPods and choose your computer's built-in microphone in that same Chrome setting.

What happens to your voice

StreamTutor uses your microphone only when you start Say it: when you hold Space on a line or click Say it in Netflix's control bar. It stops when you let go or stop talking, and also when you press Esc, press Play or switch tabs.

While it's on, your voice is streamed to OpenAI, over a connection our backend sets up, and transcribed live so the words you said can light up. We don't keep recordings or transcripts. After you say a line, its text (never your voice) may be sent to our server so the teacher can explain it. The microphone may stay ready for a few seconds after a try so the next one starts at once; nothing is sent then.

All the details are in the privacy policy.
