About

Language explanations for the shows you already watch.

People are told to learn a language by watching TV in it. With subtitles on, you follow the story, but you pick up few words. A dictionary gives you the general meaning of a word, and the line on screen often needs more than that.

StreamTutor is a Chrome extension for your own Netflix. Click any word you don't get and the show pauses. You hear what the word means in that line, out loud, in your language, broken into its parts when that helps. Then the line replays. The word turns gold on your subtitles wherever it comes back, so you can see how much of each episode you know. Short review cards bring your words back in the lines you met them. With Pro, you can also hold Space and say the line yourself: each word lights up as you say it.

Why it explains the line

You remember a word better when you understand how it's built. Hearing that Fernweh is “far” plus “ache” sticks better than the translation “wanderlust”. So StreamTutor explains the why, out loud, while you watch.

Knowing why a phrase means what it means helps you remember it.
An example explanation

On n'y peut rien.

Word for word:“One there can nothing.”

What it means:“It can't be helped.”

Here ystands in for “about it,” and onmeans “you” or “one”: people in general. People say on n'y peut rienwith a shrug, the way you'd say “that's just how it is.”
